The Hypothesis of Mediocrity Rather Than Conspiracy

"Always prefer the hypothesis of incompetence over that of conspiracy. Incompetence is common. Conspiracy requires a rare mind." – Michel Rocard

This statement rings especially true for Haiti. If we replace incompetence with mediocrity, the observation remains just as relevant. While the idea of an external conspiracy—of forces working against us—is seductive and reassuring, the reality of deep-rooted mediocrity is far more devastating.

Mediocrity, when scrutinized, reveals an unsettling abyss—an inability to rise above mere existence. It is not necessarily incompetence, as many of Haiti’s leaders have been educated at prestigious institutions, but rather a failure to embody the dignity and vision necessary for true leadership.

This toxic mix of mediocrity, political opportunism, and corruption has led to Haiti’s current chaos. There is no grand conspiracy against the country—only predatory policies from neighboring nations, taking advantage of a government that willingly surrenders its sovereignty. Leadership should be defined by conviction, responsibility, and nation-building, yet Haiti’s political class lacks direction, pride, and purpose.

Dalencour argues that true leaders take action, rather than beg for approval. Power is not granted—it is earned through vision, responsibility, and sacrifice. In Haiti’s current void, opportunists seek titles and privileges rather than genuine governance. The future depends on rejecting mediocrity in favor of integrity and accountability.
